Bruins 5 - Penguins 1

This was an absolutely outstanding game played by the Bruins tonight. They were making crisp passes that were smart and on the tape. This team really looked inspired proving that Tuesday's beating of the Senators was not a fluke. Every man on the ice was doing his job and much more. The Black and Gold limited shots by either blocking or taking away opportunities by their positional play to make things easier on Tim Thomas. Thomas is at his best when he does not need to face multiple shots each time down the ice. It was excellent defense, superb goaltending, fantastic breakouts, and terrific pressure in the offensive zone when Pittsburgh was attempting breakouts that made the difference tonight. Malkin was a ghost tonight, in fact, he barely even had an impact on the game. This may have shown Hossa where he should sign this summer...

I loved every minute of tonight's game. Of course, how could I forget? Mr. Lucic...

I wish I done this post before I went out to celebrate a friend's birthday but, hey, that happens.

Five in a row boys. Keep it going!

Bruins Notes For Tonight

Chuck Kobasew, who missed the last two games with a groin injury, will return to the lineup tonight against Pittsburgh. Kobasew skated with David Krejci and Milan Lucic during the morning skate.

Claude Julien didn't tip his hand on who will not play tonight, but the guess is that Peter Schaefer and Petteri Nokelainen will be the healthy scratches.

Tim Thomas will start tonight.

Shane Hnidy was the only Bruin not to skate this morning. Julien said it was a minor issue and that Hnidy will be at TD Banknorth Garden tonight.

Tonight's expected lineup:

Axelsson-Savard-Murray
Sturm-Metropolit-Kessel
Lucic-Krejci-Kobasew
Reich-Sobotka-Thornton

Chara-Wideman
Ference-Ward
Stuart-Hnidy

Thomas

Pittsburgh Notes

Marian Hossa, acquired by Pittsburgh five minutes before Tuesday's 3 p.m. trade deadline, will play his first game as a Penguin tonight. Hossa will wear his usual No. 18, which was given up by injured forward Adam Hall.

"It's definitely a relief," Hossa said. "Finally everything's over. I can start a new page and get a good start with a new team."

Hossa said he heard whispers about landing in Boston, where he would have been reunited with fellow Slovakian Zdeno Chara, former Atlanta teammates Marc Savard and Glen Metropolit, and ex-Senators Peter Schaefer and Shane Hnidy.

"I heard news about Boston too, but it never happened," said Hossa. "I always enjoy playing with Big Z. Maybe one day again. We'll see."

Ty Conklin will start tonight.

Ex-Bruin Hal Gill said he didn't expect being dealt by Toronto on Tuesday, but was happy to arrive in Pittsburgh. "I feel like they want me," said Gill, which brought a response from new teammate Ryan Malone. "We love you Skillsy. We really do," cracked Malone.

Senators Coach Canned

Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray fired head coach John Paddock today. Murray will now take over the duties behind the bench.

McKeon's Take: The only reason why I am posting this is because it looks like the Bruins 4-0 domination last night was the straw that broke the camel's back. Nice job boys.

Fluto's Notes 2-27-08

Boston Globe

*Chuck Kobasew made it through practice today, an indication that he will be ready for tomorrow's game against Pittsburgh. Kobasew recalled he felt a stinging pain when he first suffered the groin injury against Florida last week, but said he felt fine today. Claude Julien termed Kobasew as probable.

* Phil Kessel, the team's biggest trading chip, said he wasn't distracted by any trade talks. "If you get traded, you get traded," said Kessel. "You can't do anything about it. You can't control it."

* Andrew Alberts had an on-ice session with strength and conditioning coach John Whitesides after practice. Whitesides pushed Alberts hard through the session. One drill had Whitesides clutching onto Alberts, who sprinted through the neutral zone while pulling the coach. If Alberts continues his progress, there's a chance he could practice with his teammates next week.

* Julien guessed that Marian Hossa would skate with Evgeni Malkin tomorrow on Pittsburgh's No. 1 line. If that's the case, the Bruins are sure to deploy Zdeno Chara and Dennis Wideman against the line, and also send out P.J. Axelsson, Marc Savard, and Glen Murray.

* Julien was surprised by Ottawa's performance last night. "We've seen this team enough to know that their confidence level is just not there," said Julien. "This was not a team that I recognized. With the talent that they have, they just didn't seem like a confident group."

* Tim Thomas is expected to start tomorrow.

Boston 4 - Ottawa 0

If the trade deadline naysayers could see the Bruins now they would be shocked, as they claimed to have hitched a ride off of the Bruins wagon. Well, I'm sure they didn't stray too far and they will hop back on momentarily. Thus, making them bandwagon fans, and no longer a fan.

Outstanding game by all parties in Black and Gold. Tim Thomas was as solid as gold, the grind line (sorry Detroit) did their job and created energy from the drop of the puck as the Reich-Sobotka-Thornton combination started the game. The defense also did not allow many opportunities to a very potent Senators line-up.

To quote from a previous post from today...
We may see a lot of jump in the Black and Gold tonight as many guys will be relieved that they do not have to move. Confidence from upper management in not disrupting the team's chemistry should be a huge morale boost for this club.

Minus a letdown at the beginning of the 3rd period the team played solid at both ends of the ice all game long. This team showed that it has the intensity, the chemistry, the desire, and the skills to play in June.

Great game boys, it was very entertaining to watch.

Tonight's Lines vs Ottawa

No live blog tonight. It's been a long day at the computer and I need a beer and the big screen...

Based on pregame warmups:

Axelsson-Savard-Murray
Sturm-Metropolit-Kessel
Lucic-Krejci-Schaefer
Reich-Sobotka-Thornton

Chara-Wideman
Ference-Ward
Stuart-Hnidy

Thomas

* Martin Gerber (23-10-2, 2.67 GAA, .912 save percentage) will start in goal for the Senators.

Stand Pete

The headline says it all. General Manager Peter Chiarelli stood still and did not make a panic move that would have sacrificed the depth of this organization. If you really think about it, the Bruins come out as huge winners in all of this. No one near the Bruins in the playoff hunt improved significantly in any way shape or form. In fact, the Bruins could grab a five spot just from not making a move! If the Bruins can maintain a strong defensive play and score when opportunities arise this team could do damage. Chiarelli did not sacrifice any of the future and this team could still potentially open some eyes in a very weak Eastern Conference.

We may see a lot of jump in the Black and Gold tonight as many guys will be relieved that they do not have to move. Confidence from upper management in not disrupting the team's chemistry should be a huge morale boost for this club.

I may be doing a live blog, I'll keep you posted.

Funny Feeling About Hossa

I still have a funny feeling that Chiarelli could pry Hossa out of Atlanta without giving up Phil Kessel in the 11th hour. The Thrashers may get desperate heading toward 3 O'Clock and make a desperation move so they don't lose Hossa this summer for nothing.

Update 2:58

Hossa To Pittsburgh...wow...when Crosby comes back the team is ridiculous.

Roster Mishap?

Phil Kessel is not currently on the Boston Bruins roster on their website. Is this a mistake or is Hossa coming to town?

Update 1:45 pm

According to TSN, Phil Kessel's absence is merely due to a paper transaction to make him eligible for the AHL playoffs. I'm not sure why he would do this now. I'm kind of lost on it so, I'll just let it play out.

Update 2:19
From the Bruins Website
Jim Benning, From the 2 o'clock podcast:
"Phil never got traded...we're keeping Phil. Phil is part of our future and he's a Bruin."

Jim also said:
"We got one more thing in the fire, here. We'll see how that turns out."

Bruins Hossa Bubble Popped?

According to Ross McKeon (no relation) on Yahoo Sports there are already two trades set to happen tommorow. One of them involves Hossa and neither of the trades involve Boston.
The Dallas Stars will acquire Tampa Bay Lightning center Brad Richards in a multi-player trade and Atlanta Thrashers right wing Marian Hossa is heading to the Montreal Canadiens before the NHL trade deadline, an executive within the league said Monday night.

The Habs just got a whole lot better my friends. Still looking forward to tomorrow...

Update 6:21 a.m.
Here is a morning read (and another) that describes why Chiarelli backed out of the deal. It looks like we have a talented and smart GM on our hands. A rental without a guarantee would not help the team right now. Excellent job Pete!

Deadline Thoughts

At 3 P.M. on Tuesday afternoon the trade deadline will come to a close. All NHL rosters will be set (except for call-ups/send downs, and the occasional waiver wire pick-up) and teams will make their push for the playoffs or set themselves to give prospects experience and throw in the towel for 2007-2008. I feel as if tomorrow could be a busy day. I heard on ESPN that since 1994 there have been moves in the double digits every year. Here are my deadline thoughts...

-I am having difficulty committing to one side or another on whether or not Hossa will be dealt here. Some say that a deal was nixed as soon as Chiarelli came out and claimed that Kessel will remain a Bruin. I still feel that Chiarelli still could trade Kessel for Hossa but, could also trade other high end prospects for him as well. What is worse? Chiarelli coming and saying "I am trying to trade one of our best prospects," and not completing the deal potentially making Kessel feel unwanted; or Chiarelli saying "I am not trading Kessel," and then landing the best player at the trade deadline. With the latter Chiarelli can respond to the media with, "A opportunity to obtain a player like Hossa does not come very often. I felt that our team needed a player like Hossa. This decision has nothing against Phil as he is a terrific young talent with a lot of potential to do some terrific things in this league. We want to wish him the best of luck and thank him for all he did here." What's the best scenario? Thank you.

-Bruins fans need to understand that it is rather difficult to move under-productive players like Hnidy and Schaefer. Please, for the sake of your sanity, and mine, stop making trade offers that bring back great young talent for Hnidy and a pick from teams competing for a playoff spot. I know Bruins fans have had to live with the infamous Thornton trade but, before you make these inane offers, put yourselves in the shoes of the opposing GM and see if you would make the trade. Come on folks this isn't NHL 08 where the opposing GMs can not reject trades.

-If Hossa does not come to Boston, there is a 99% chance that the Bruins will not be able to sign him in July. It is more likely than not that any team that trades for him will sign an extension. Don't be sold on him coming here in his prime if he isn't a Bruin come 3:01 Tuesday afternoon.

-If Chiarelli does not make a move tomorrow he is not a bad GM. This program has a lot of promise for the future and it would be a federal offense if he traded a bunch of prospects away. According to reports from people who have access to their locker room, the team chemistry is very high. The 2004 Red Sox won with a great group of guys while other teams with a bunch of stars didn't have as much heart and fun. Look at the New York Rangers the past few years.

-The asking prices of some of the guys like Hossa and Jokinen are so high because so many teams are inquiring about them. Once it gets closer to three o'clock the asking price could sky rocket or it could go low if the GMs are really desperate to get a guy out, i.e. Hossa. There is still a very small chance that the Bruins could obtain Hossa without Kessel but, it is very minute. If it starts to get closer to three o'clock and he hasn't been dealt, keep an eye out for this scenario.

Looking forward to tomorrow...

Forsberg Signs

That's right, Peter Forsberg is back with the Colorado Avalanche. This wasn't a trade but, is this the drop that breaks the dam? Only time will tell...

Update 11:19

Sorry I didn't get this out earlier, I was out for a late dinner. Prospal was sent to Philadelphia for a defenseman and a pick. Not a bad deal for Philly. I'm glad I didn't miss a Bruins trade but, I will do a Deadline Thoughts post after a load of laundry...

Another Former Sen Rumored

Boston Herald

The Herald is reporting that the Bruins have some interest in former Ottawa Senator and current Chicago Blackhawk, Martin Havlat. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said that some of the big names will stay in town by tomorrow's trade deadline (Tuesday, 3 P.M.) but, Hossa will not be one of them. Unfortunately for hopeful Boston fans, Hossa may not be wearing Black and Gold Tuesday night because of the awfully high asking price. Although it is not out of the question, Hossa looks to be headed elsewhere as they were seeking out Phil Kessel whom Chiarelli wants to retain.

McKeon's Hossa Take: I would love to see him here but, if the asking price hurts the farm system then it's useless. I truly believe in Chiarelli at this point. He is trying to rebuild this franchise after being handed nearly nothing. Remember how good the prospects and the farm system were before Chiarelli? How good is Providence now? The future is bright, I rest my case.

Havlat Take: Havlat as a Plan B doesn't seem like a terrible option. I have a feeling he would work well with Marc Savard on the first line as he has a terrific scoring talent. My approval (like I have any pull with the Bruins front office) would depend upon the asking price. According to Sportsnet.ca he can play either wing...hmm...versatile.

Bergeron on WEEI

Some time after 1:30 today, Patrice Bergeron will field questions from Dale Arnold and Mike Holley on WEEI. Be sure to tune in and support one of our favorite Bruins!

Update 1:48
Patrice sounded very confident about coming back this season while speaking on WEEI today. He mentioned that he is taking this very slow because of the severity of the injury but, he is taking everything in a positive light. With his positive attitude it seems like the best positive result can come from all this, full health. Bergeron also mentioned that these last two days (skated for the first time in as many days) he turned a corner in his recovery. Think about how Bergeron sounded compared to today's interview. He has done a 180 since then. The next corner will probably be him practicing with the team again.

Get well, Patrice! We can not wait to see you at full health wearing the Spoked B in the Garden again.

Suggestion Box

With 13 days in the books here at The Spoked B I feel like we have made some pretty successful strides in such a short period of time. I think it can mostly be attributed to all Bruins fans for being so passionate about their favorite team and the sport of hockey. Never let that passion go. I was curious if anyone had any suggestions for the site. Maybe things you would like to see or things that you have seen thus far that rub you the wrong way. Please leave your suggestions in the comment box or feel free to e-mail them to the address on the side bar. I hope you all continue to read and comment as you have. The site doesn't work without you guys!

Thanks and go Bruins!

-McKeon

Long Term IR Update

Chiarelli said he is confident Patrice Bergeron will try skating “any day now,” and also noted that it is not out of the question that goalie Manny Fernandez (knee surgery) could play again this season. Fernandez will resume skating in the coming week.

“There’s a chance he might play in Providence,” said Chiarelli. “Or who knows? He might be ready for a game here.”

Bruins 5 - Lightning 3

I don't have much to say about the game as I was watching the game on my buddy's computer during a party.  It's nice to see the Bruins pick up a pair of huge points tonight.  This was a five game road trip that left 10 points available at the beginning.  The B's took 9 points.  I love it.  The Bruins really need to continue their winning ways at home if they want to get into the playoffs comfortably.  Maybe a successful road trip will entice Hossa to request a trade to Boston and sign an extension.  Again, wishful thinking from me.  Leave your comments about the game...

Bergeron To Lace 'Em Up?

The Boston Herald reports that Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said that center Patrice Bergeron could take the next big step in his comeback from a serious concussion within the next five days: A return to the ice for the first time since he was hurt Oct. 27. . . .

Kobasew Out; Nokelainen In; Auld In

Chuck Kobasew will not play tonight because of a groin injury he suffered late in Thursday's 5-4 shootout win over Florida. Kobasew got tangled up with Jay Bouwmeester, fell awkwardly, and appeared to be in significant pain.

Claude Julien said the injury is minor and there's a possibility Kobasew could play on Tuesday against Ottawa.

* Phil Kessel will skate in Kobasew's spot on the second line. Petteri Nokelainen, who hasn't played since last Saturday, will re-enter the lineup.

* Alex Auld will start tonight. After relieving Tim Thomas to start the third period on Thursday, Auld didn't allow a single puck to get past him. Julien said it was a reward for Auld, but also a chance to give Thomas a rest headed into next week, when the Bruins play Ottawa, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta at home.

* Johan Holmqvist will start for Tampa Bay.

Tonight's expected lineup:

Axelsson-Savard-Murray
Sturm-Metropolit-Kessel
Lucic-Krejci-Nokelainen
Reich-Sobotka-Thornton

Chara-Wideman
Ference-Ward
Stuart-Hnidy

Auld

Defensive Decisions

According to the Boston Globe
With the recent struggles of Shane Hnidy and Mark Stuart, the Bruins could use another stay-at-home defenseman to bolster the third defensive pairing.

GM Peter Chiarelli said he's hoping for a healthy Andrew Alberts to return from a neck injury, which would eliminate the need to trade for a defenseman before Tuesday. Chiarelli, however, acknowledged that Alberts's recovery time is unknown. Alberts has been skating on his own this week at Ristuccia Arena.

In 21 games with the Bruins, Hnidy has proven to be a No. 7 defenseman.

Chiarelli: "NOT Trading Kessel"

According to the Boston Globe

Although he's still hunting for a top-six forward prior to Tuesday's 3 p.m. deadline, GM Peter Chiarelli said Phil Kessel would not be part of any package.

"I really don't entertain trading him," said Chiarelli. "You've got to be patient with these players."

With the asking price for Marian Hossa being a young NHLer, a prospect, and a first-round pick, Kessel could be the first component of a trade for the Atlanta winger. However, Chiarelli made it sound like he'll hold on to the 20-year-old, although he acknowledged he has listened to offers for every player on his roster, including Kessel.

Chiarelli denied a Toronto Sun report that had Kessel going to Philadelphia for forward Jeff Carter.

All Is Quiet...

There is nothing new or significant being reported on the Bruins trade front in regards to Hossa, Stoll, Suter, or anyone else for that matter. Is this a calm before the storm or is this just simply a sign that nothing really is going on? That's just something to ponder...Also, where is PJ Stock when you need him to create rumors? I think it is hilarious that he made up a rumor about Hossa to Boston just to exploit Eklund's credibility. However, it is Eklund's job to report rumors, not facts. I don't blame him at all for taking the bait. People need to remember that rumors are far from facts. It's all speculation. There's no need to put all your stock (no pun intended, I recognized this while proofing) in rumors because I am sure there are many "PJ Stocks" out there trying to get some recognition. Would the hockey world be talking about PJ Stock the past couple days if he didn't make up that rumor? No sir.

Chistov Clears

Stanislav Chistov was not claimed on waivers prior to today's noon deadline, freeing the winger to be assigned to Providence. Chistov is currently on a one-way deal worth $800,000. Chistov's number will not count against the Bruins' cap.

The AHL, however, must approve the Bruins' appeal to have Chistov play for the P-Bruins. The league usually frowns upon players who have competed in Europe past Dec. 15 to appear in the AHL the same year.

Bruin Bowlers

The Bruins will not practice this morning in Tampa. The next time they will hit the ice is tomorrow at the St. Pete Times Forum for the morning skate at 11:30 a.m. Instead of practicing today, the Bruins are going bowling as a team-building event. I think this is a great idea as some guys are banged up a bit and it can keep spirits up during the long road trip. Great call by the coaching staff.

Deadline Rumors Make Some Folks Jumpy

RDS.ca followed up on a report last night indicating the Canadiens had ordered equipment with their team colors for Marian Hossa, however, it was false, in fact the equipment was actually for his brother, Marcel Hossa.

The equipment was a pair of gloves that were delivered to the Bell Center on Tuesday when Marian's brother, Marcel, and the New York Rangers came to town. However, Marcel didn’t suit up that game and is currently playing in the AHL for the Wolf Pack. Apparently he has his gloves made by a Canadian company and he took advantage of the trip to Montreal by having them deliver it to the arena, rather than to the teams affiliate in Hartford.

The colors of the equipment for the Canadiens and the Rangers are identical. It was all a simple mis-understanding.

McKeon's Take: Haha! Now that is just plain funny and more laughable that it happened to Montreal. Seriously, what are the odds? They don't write coincidence like that in Disney movies.

Bruins 5 - Panthers 4 SO

The Bruins pull off a much need extra point in a 5-4 shootout victory over the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Florida. The Bruins are now in a three way tie for sixth with the Rangers and the Sabres at 68 points.

Ladies and gentlemen, your all-star for the game is Alex Auld. Coming into a game cold and not surrendering a goal in the third period, overtime, or the shootout secured this honor. Auld made some big saves after filling in for Thomas's two period dismal effort. Thomas made 8 saves on 12 shots while Auld stopped all 15 shots he faced and stopped two of the three shooters in the shootout as the final shooter missed the net. Excellent night for Auld to step up.

The Bruins played pretty well overall tonight. Unfortunately, they made major mistakes that lead to goals. Other than that, they were playing sound, intense hockey. These mistakes have to be cut down if they want to cause any raucous in the playoffs. This team showed a lot of heart battling back after being down by two goals through two. It can be very frustrating being down by two after putting 30 shots on goal and only two going in as Vokoun played on his head in the first two stanzas. I am a firm believer in countless shots on goal, whether it is a weak or a strong opportunity it can weather a goaltender and it showed tonight as Vokoun began to look a bit lackadaisical as the high shot total took it's toll (final tally for Boston: 48)

Hopefully the Thrashers saw Kessel put the puck into the net and will pull the trigger on Hossa coming to Boston. I really think it would truly make a difference.

All the Bruins have to do is knock off the stupid mental break downs and this team could make a push for the third round. I know it's wishful thinking and a lot has to come together but, I think it is entirely possible but, if, and only if everything comes together.

Starting Line-up for tonight

No changes from the previous game...

Axelsson-Savard-Murray
Sturm-Metropolit-Kobasew
Lucic-Krejci-Kessel
Reich-Sobotka-Thornton

Chara-Wideman
Ference-Ward
Stuart-Hnidy

Thomas

* Tomas Vokoun will start in goal for the Panthers.

Chistov back in North America

Stanislav Chistov is en route to Providence, where the former No. 5 overall pick hopes to get back into the Boston fold.

Chistov is still under suspension, but the winger, jettisoned by his Russian Super League team earlier this year, may dress for the P-Bruins this season.

GM Peter Chiarelli said that while there's no room for Chistov with the big club this season, he wants to give him another look to evaluate whether he can play the North American game.

However, Chiarelli must go through a hearing with the AHL for Chistov to be cleared for action. There is an issue because Chistov played in Europe after Dec. 15, which Chiarelli explained is a cutoff date established by the AHL. Chiarelli said there is a chance Chistov's bid to return could be denied by the AHL.

Chistov will be a restricted free agent after this season. Chistov would have earned $800,000 in the NHL this season, but he most likely made more than $1 million in the Russian League.

Hossa Horse Race Leader...Boston?

(Hockey Buzz)However, according to a source, the new favorite may indeed be Boston (regarding Hossa)....and another source is telling me that Montreal has come in FAR too low.

(The Fourth Period) Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli is searching for some extra scoring and is believed to be pursuing Atlanta Thrashers sniper Marian Hossa. Hossa is set to become a UFA this summer and a number of teams, including the Montreal Canadiens and Bruins, are very interested in acquiring him before next Tuesday. The Thrashers and Bruins have been talking and its believe Atlanta would want young forward Phil Kessel as part of a package for Hossa.

(Hockey Leaks)
Hossa is likely to be traded in a "hockey deal". Names rumoured back to Atlanta include Marleau (san jose), Murray and Kessel (Boston) and Higgins (Montreal).

If all this is true, I'd go wild. That is all.

Bruins 3 - 'Canes 2 SO

The Bruins finally get a win against the 'Canes and all I have to say is, it's about time. I missed the game so, leave highlights in the comment box to help me get the jist of things. I did see a headline on yahoo saying they blew the lead. Let's hear about it.

Bruins Sign Bodnarchuk

Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk to an entry-level contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

"Andrew has the ability to be a prototypical defenseman in the new NHL," said Chiarelli. "He is smart, and can both move the puck and skate well. As he learns how to play against bigger and stronger players at the NHL level, he will mature into a productive player for our club."

Bodnarchuk, a 5'11, 190-pound defenseman, was selected by the Bruins with their fifth pick (128th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) since the 2005-2006 season, tallying nine goals and 32 assists in 55 games for the Mooseheads this season.

Last season, the 19-year old defenseman scored 16 goals and registered four assists in 63 regular season games. He also amassed 96 penalty minutes. During the Mooseheads' playoff run he added 11 points, and 25 penalty minutes in 12 games.

During his 2005-2006 season with Halifax, Bodnarchuk scored six goals and added 17 assists and 136 penalty minutes in 68 regular season games. He also accumulated 22 penalty minutes in 11 post-season games.

I definitely miss the Lucic-Metro-Kobes line. However, there has to be a shake-up with a lack of goals so, I can't blame the coaching staff with mixing it up a bit. Hopefully we can finally take one from the 'Canes this season.

I won't be around immediately following tonight's game because the team I coach has a game far away. We are playing a team with one loss and need 3 points in 2 games to make the playoffs. If we lose, we are done. So, depending on my mood, I may not do a post game post tonight. Feel free to post your thoughts under this post if that is the case.

Tuesday Practice Notes

-Petteri Nokelainen (flu-like symptoms) is feeling better but will not play tonight. Neither will Peter Schaefer (shin), who stayed out on the ice after the morning skate with Alex Auld and Bobby Allen.

-Tim Thomas will start tonight.

-Glen Murray, Zdeno Chara, and Dennis Wideman didn't participate in the morning skate but will play tonight.

"One thing they do well is take away a lot of space in the neutral zone," said Claude Julien. "They're a very tight-checking team. Their D move up on the wingers. They play a 1-3-1 system where their wingers lock up on one side and their other D move up. There's not much you can do in the neutral zone. Somehow you've got to get pucks deep and work in their own end. We can't get cute. We've got to get pucks past them with good chips, get pucks deep, and get to work in the offensive zone."

'Canes Odds & Ends

Goaltending: Cam Ward (24-20-3, 2.91), John Grahame (5-7-1, 3.75).
Head to head: This is the last of four meetings. Carolina has won the previous three, including a 3-2 decision a week ago in Boston.
Miscellany: The Hurricanes have been hit hard by injury and illness: Captain Brind'Amour will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn left ACL Thursday, while Whitney (groin) and Erik Cole (flu) missed yesterday's loss in New Jersey, leaving the team without three of its top five scorers . . . Former Bruin Sergei Samsonov has 6 goals and 13 points and is a plus-6 in 18 games.

Monday Practice Notes

From Ristuccia Arena
-After his teammates concluded their practice, Andrew Alberts went on the ice for approximately 15 minutes of work with assistant coach Doug Houda. Alberts said his neck is feeling better and he's scheduled to be re-evaluated on Wednesday to determine whether he can ramp up his workouts. Alberts will not be on the three-game trip.

-Petteri Nokelainen sat out practice because of flu-like symptoms. Nokelainen will travel with the team.

-Peter Schaefer (shin) practiced on the fourth line today and will travel to Raleigh. Schaefer didn't think he'd be ready to play in any of the games. Schaefer still has the stitches in his shin.

-Peter Chiarelli is currently in Naples, Fla., for the first day of the GM meetings. Claude Julien said he hasn't addressed his players about the impending trade deadline, which is 3 p.m. next Tuesday. "It's the reality of the game," Julien said of trade talks. "I know this is a time where players worry more than ever. But it could happen at any time of the year. We know there's probably going to be some action going on here in the next week."

Something Being Manufactured In The Rumor Mill

On Hockey Buzz.com, Eklund is reporting that Jarret Stoll could come to Boston (e2). An e2 is defined as:
is simply more than one reliable sources not in any way directly connected to the players or teams involved and not connected to each other. It does not have to equate to two e1’s. It could be several e1’s.
An e1 is a rumor that comes from a single reliable source not in any way directly connected to the players or teams involved.

Stoll is most likely not the missing piece to the puzzle that is a Stanley Cup contender however, he would be a welcomed piece. Since I have not seen Stoll play much because he is on the west coast of Canada I looked up what he has to offer online. Sportsnet.ca's scouting report on Jarret Stoll is as follows:

Assets
Has excellent two-way ability and sound leadership qualities. Also possesses a wicked shot and plenty of grit. Can play the point on power plays.

Flaws
Needs to show more consistency in order to take his game to the next level. Could stand to slow things down and not rush things in the offensive zone.

Career Potential
Second line center

For the right price, sign me up. I love those assets and I think that those flaws could be dealt with for the better. I just don't want Chiarelli to deal away the farm system for a guy like this. But, for something like a pick and Peter Schaefer (who probably just needs a change of scenary because Boston isn't working for him) I'm all for it.

Notes: Stoll serves as an alternate captain in Edmonton. The only thing that makes me nervous is that he is a minus 17. Despite that, I think Julien's system can bring that one down.

Andrew Alberts Report

From Andrew Alberts's blog on the Bruins website:

Happy Sunday everyone!

Here's a quick little update on my status.

I finally got some great news on my recovery. The doctors and trainers have been working together to set up a workout schedule for me and things have been progressing nicely.

And, I know you may have read this elsewhere, but I have been upgraded from "no workouts" to a steady workout plan that includes skating!

Yup, you read that right, skating!

I still have a lot of work to do for me to get back into game shape, but I'm doing what I can.

There is not timetable for my return as of yet, but let's hope for sooner than later.

Again, thanks to everyone for all of your support.

Hossa to Boston?

Boston Globe
As the weekend approached, Marian Hossa sounded more and more as if he wouldn't get a deal done with the Thrashers, which should only intensify the offers Atlanta GM Don Waddell receives this week. As the weekend approached, Marian Hossa sounded more and more as if he wouldn't get a deal done with the Thrashers, which should only intensify the offers Atlanta GM Don Waddell receives this week.

The Bruins will be among the many to reiterate interest in Hossa, the depth of their offer depending on whether they would be taking him as a rental or could tie him up long term in what would amount to a sign-and-trade with the Thrashers. The latter scenario almost certainly would cost the Bruins assets such as Phil Kessel and Mark Stuart, Boston's top picks in 2006 and 2003. A steep price, for sure, but Hossa's age (29) and career goal count (296 in 687 games) would justify the payment.

Leafs 4 - Bruins 3 OT

Unfortunately, the Bruins played another inconsistent game and lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in overtime. I wish Andrew Ference picked up Darcy Tucker on the overtime goal instead of coasting but, you can't change what is already done. After watching a team struggle to put the puck in the net yet again, it makes me want Chiarelli to deal for Hossa more and more. I hope Julien and the coaching staff tear the defense a new one for not picking up guys down low on the third and fourth goals. Giving up a lead that quick through stupid penalties and a lack of concentration in a game that means so much is unacceptable. These were two very important points tonight and it is simply awful giving up points to division opponents, even if they are as bad as the Leafs. In fact, giving up points like the Bruins did tonight is similar to giving up points to teams ahead and behind the Bruins (see: Rangers, Sabres, etc).

The Bruins have a few days off before they head south to face-off with the Carolina Hurricanes again. I will be going out tonight to forget about this game. Have a good night all.

Bruins Notes For Tonight

Kevin Paul Dupont- Boston Globe
TORONTO - Glen Murray took the morning off at the Air Canada Centre, but the veteran Bruins winger will be in action tonight when Boston faces the Maple Leafs.

Murray, sidelined for six weeks with an injured hip flexor and only recently back in the lineup, took the morning off for preventive maintenance.

Murray played 19:04 in Pittsburgh last Wednesday night, the most he has played in the four games since his return. He has gone 1-1 -2 since his return, collecting both points in a 6-3 loss to the Panthers.

Petteri Nokelainen filled in for Murray on a line with P.J. Axelsson (LW) and Marc Savard (C).

-----

Chuck Kobasew, whose finicky back forced him to sit out the game in Pittsburgh, made it through the morning workout and was declared eligible to suit up against the Leafs.

"I've got a decision to make, and I'm not sure what that is yet," said coach Claude Julien.

Making it difficult for Julien: the strong play of Jeremy Reich in Pittsburgh. Reich had not dressed for three straight games, and played only 9:51 against the Pens, but it was a productive 9:51. Reich made a huge hit on Georges Laraque and then dished to the middle for the key assist on Vladimir Sobotka's first career goal.

-----

Veteran blue liner Aaron Ward, who spent Wednesday night in a Pittsburgh hospital while the Bruins flew home, also was back in the lineup.

According to Ward, he suffered fractured cartilage in the throat Wednesday when hit across the front of the neck by ex-Boston defenseman Sergei Gonchar. The hit, delivered with Gonchar's right glove, which he had wrapped around his stick, tore the cartilage and caused internal bleeding.

But the biggest problem immediately following the hit, said Ward, was that he couldn't breathe.

"It was scary - I couldn't get any air in, and I was starting to go into convulsions," said Ward. "It took me a few minutes to get some air, finally, and then I started to cough up phlegm and blood."

After a night in the hospital, Ward flew home Thursday afternoon and underwent another examination Friday at Massachusetts General Hospital. A scope pushed down his threat, said Ward, showed the broken cartilage. After the morning workout at ACC, he said his neck remained sore, especially when turning it side to side. The good news: the pain didn't force him to change his diet.

"Nothing stops me from eating," said Ward.

------

Glen Metropolit, who grew up in public housing not far from the ACC, had his own little cheering section in the stands for the morning workout. Cabbagetown, the area where he grew up, is slowly transforming from "project" housing to gentrified, upscale housing.

Head to head: This is the fifth of eight meetings. Toronto won the last game but lost the first three.
Miscellany: The Maple Leafs are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but only 8 points behind the eighth-place Bruins . . . The Leafs have allowed 190 goals, tied for second most in the league . . . Toskala, signed in the offseason, has held up his end of the bargain, but Raycroft has not held an opponent to fewer than three goals since November . . . The Leafs have 20 one-goal losses . . . One possible explanation for the Leafs' dismal record: They are the only team in the league to rank in the bottom three in power-play and penalty-killing percentages.

*Zdeno Chara is the only player missing this morning. More on the injuries below.

**Murray is back playing on the top line. I'm not sure I feel about this line-up but, this team needs more offense. Maybe this will help Savard become less frustrated. I love the Lucic-Metro-Kobes combination.

***I apologize for the lack of posts to help you get through the work day on a Friday. The High School team I coach had a big game today and the Bruins were the last thing on my mind. Unfortunately, we tied and now need 3 points in the last 2 games to make the playoffs. Hopefully the Bergy video was enough of a pick-me-up to get you into the weekend.

Ward Good To Go

(Boston Globe) Aaron Ward made it through practice today without limitations. Ward is traveling with the team to Toronto, has been cleared to play, and should be in the lineup tomorrow. Ward said he couldn't take full breaths until he returned to the locker room on Wednesday after being jabbed in the throat by Sergei Gonchar. Ward said the cartilage in his esophagus was damaged, which led to him coughing up blood.

Also...
Chuck Kobasew (back) also skated for the entire session today. Claude Julien said that unless he experiences stiffness before tomorrow night, the winger should be available.

Zdeno Chara didn't practice but will travel to Toronto and is expected to play. Bobby Allen will travel and most likely serve as the spare defenseman.

Peter Schaefer (shin) skated in a non-contact jersey today. He will remain in Boston.

Injury Update, Version 11:45

**Aaron Ward is scheduled to return to Boston from Pittsburgh this afternoon after being kept overnight for precautionary measures in a Pittsburgh hospital. I'm not sure when or if the Bruins will report his official condition but, when/if they do, you know you can find it here.

**Andrew Alberts wasn’t suffering from post-concussion syndrome as suspected but rather a neck injury that is now being treated with twice-weekly physical therapy. The plan calls for him to continue with the therapy sessions for three weeks.

**Chuck Kobasew, sidelined in the third period of Tuesday night's loss to Carolina, did not dress against the Penguins. According to Julien, he was sidelined by a back injury, one that isn't expected to keep him out too long. "If it were a playoff game, maybe we'd have gotten him in there," said Julien. "But he didn't have much [range of motion]."

Aaron Ward Update

Boston Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward left last night's game under his own power with a neck injury after a collision with Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar. Ward is in stable condition in a hospital, the second time this week an NHL player has required such treatment for such an injury. Ward was not bleeding when he left the ice and did not leave on a stretcher. Following the 2-1 victory, coach Claude Julien said

“They just want to play it safe and keep him here for 24 hours before they release him. All I know is that he was coughing up some blood and that’s why they sent him to the hospital to get him under observation to make sure everything’s under control.”
The 35-year-old Ward was skating toward Gonchar near the end boards when Gonchar got either his forearm or his stick up and accidentally struck Ward in the throat.
"I got there and he was making a choking sound, holding his throat and gasping for air," Zdeno Chara said.
The Bruins were told Ward wasn't seriously hurt, but that he should remain in UPMC Presbyterian for at least 24 hours as a precaution. The team did not disclose the exact nature of Ward's injury.

Bruins 2 - Penguins 1

From the Igloo in Pittsburgh:

The Bruins did what they had to and squeezed out a much needed victory against the Penguins. Unfortunately, I missed a little more than half the game because I was out helping a buddy by a Valentines Day gift for his girlfriend. It seems like I missed a pretty solid first with two unlikely "scorers" putting the puck in the net. Vladimir Sobotka tallied his first career NHL goal while Petteri Nokelainen earned his 6th goal on the seaosn.

Jeremy Reich made his presence known tonight after being out for three games as a scratch by earning an assist and doing a lot of grind work that 3rd and 4th liners should be doing. Nice, to see him come out with a fire under his caboose.

Tim Thomas played phenomenal in the third period on some key chances in close from the Penguins. The goal was not, in any way, his fault. It was a powerplay goal, Evgeni Malkin was wide open because Shane Hnidy was taken down, and Malkin picked the corner with Thomas cutting down the angle very well. Thomas is a shut down goaltender no matter how many people deny it. Pittsburgh only had 21 shots on goal but, Thomas made a lot of key saves to preserve the victory.

Speaking of goaltending, where did Ty Conklin come from? The back-up for Marc-Andre Fleury became the starter a month or two back after Fleury went down with a knee injury. The Penguins were rumored to be looking for goaltending but, Conklin reeled off nine straight wins and is still playing very strong as the Penguins are second in the east. Conklin made major saves on two separate breakaways, one of them a 2-on-0. Despite the loss, the UNH graduate played a very strong game shutting down the Bruins for the final two periods.

The referees are not usually a topic I like to discuss but, tonight was exceptionally one-sided. Between the non-call on Ward, the "kneeing" on Wideman, and the "interference " also on Wideman I didn't know what to think. I had no idea Wideman had a knee in his shoulder and no clue that you could get an interference call for knocking a player off the puck.

However, the B's walk away with two major points. They are now tied for 8th place with the Rangers at 63 points. The Bruins are granted the official last playoff spot for the time being because they have two games in hand and lead the season series versus the blue shirts.

I loved the intensity the team showed tonight. More of the same, with more goals, will hopefully follow.

Next up, in Toronto on Saturday.

Penguins Preview

Tonight, the Bruins look to bounce back from an embarrassing 3-2 loss against Carolina. This is a terrific opportunity to take advantage of a Crosby-less Penguins team. The Penguins are in second place in the Eastern conference with 69 points while the visiting Bruins sit on the outside looking in with the ninth spot, having 61 points. This is a tight race as the Bruins are 6 points away from fourth place. If the Bruins can go on a roll they could easily place themselves up there.

The Bruins need to look themselves in the mirror and figure out that only 110% from everyone is going to get them into a playoff spot. If they are caught watching the play instead of playing smart hockey (like last night) then the same result will take place. As Federko mentioned in his comment under the previous post, "I hope Savard doesn't ask for a trade." Savard has to be frustrated. Chiarelli needs to understand that Savard is the base of this offense. Without Savard, the Bruins could have 10 goals this year (I know, it's a stretch).

McKeon's three keys to tonight's game:
1. Score early. The Bruins need momentum like Roger Clemens needs the truth right now. The Bruins need to get on the board early and keep the pressure in the offensive zone.

2. Hit 'em hard, hit 'em early. The Bruins need to take a piece out of Lucic's book and hit the snot out of Pitt. They need to knock the Penguins off their game and take control of the play.

3. As I mentioned before, the Bruins can not be caught puck watching. They started doing it last night after the air was let out of the balloon on the infamous kicking goal. Keep the legs moving, no reaching, and don't watch the play because thats what the fans are for.

The line-up for tonight is yet to be made available. If I am around the computer prior to game time I will post them. Other than that I'll be back after the game for analysis...hopefully on a victory. I'm not making a prediction because I have terrible gambling luck plus, last night I was off, and my goaltender's superstition will keep me from repeating something after a loss.

'Canes 3 - Bruins 2

A lackluster game for the black and gold. I am really disappointed by what I saw overall. There was a lot of puck watching like it was squirt hockey, there was no answer to the speed of Carolina, and the Bruins did absolutely nothing. Even the two goals were a little bogus. The Bruins needed the momentum of a cheap goal in the first, not the last five minutes of the third. However, the first Bruins goal is a lesson to all the youngsters out there.
"It is never a bad idea to put a puck on net because anything can happen in front."
I'd like to hear everyone else's take about the game tonight because I am too tired and too frustrated to go on a major rant here. B's have to bounce back tomorrow night in Pittsburgh.

Hurricanes Preview

Captain Zdeno Chara did not skate this morning but, is expected to play tonight. Coach Julien, once again, termed his absence as "routine maintenance." Since the Bruins play at Pittsburgh tomorrow Auld will get the nod in goal. Auld played very well this past weekend in a shootout win over Buffalo so, this start is very deserving as Thomas needs as much rest as possible down the stretch.

Here's the expected lines for tonight that skated in practice this morning...if Chara is available (if not, Bobby Allen is apparently good to go):

Sturm-Savard-Kessel
Lucic-Metropolit-Kobasew
Axelsson-Krejci-Murray
Sobotka-Nokelainen-Thornton

Chara-Wideman
Stuart-Ward
Ference-Hnidy

Auld

***Update 3:39***
McKeon's prediction: The Bruins have been unable to beat the 'Canes in two attempts so far this year (0-2) losing both games by one goal. This comes to a bit of a surprise considering the'Canes have struggled for the majority of the year. Times will change tonight as the Bruins will win it 4-2.

2008 Beanpot Champions

Congratulations to Boston College on their 6-5 overtime victory over Harvard University in Monday night's Beanpot championship. This was the Eagles 14th Beanpot championship. Boston University beat Northeastern in the consolation game 5-4. The final was an excellent, fast-paced, and high-scoring contest as is usually the case in this storied tournament. Congrats to all four teams on giving the fans another successful Beanpot.

Chara Misses On-Ice Practice

Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe reported that captain Zdeno Chara missed the on-ice practice today. Chara revealed that he tweaked his knee a bit in the third period of Saturday's game but, it was nothing to be concerned about. Head coach Claude Julien stated the following regarding Chara...
"...a maintenance day. He had a little bit of a charley horse [on Saturday], He logs a lot of ice time, so I think he can miss a couple of practices."

When Julien was asked if he will play Tuesday he responded with
"I hope so."

With Chara not taking part of the skating group, Bobby Allen, continuing to get stronger after a recent bout of back spasms, was given extra duty in the workout. Chara’s agent, Matt Keator, who spent time with Chara on Sunday, reported in an email that his prized client was experiencing ‘’general soreness.’’ Chara was not available in the dressing room after the practice.

McKeon's Take- Let's hope it is as advertised, not serious.

Sens & Canes Make Swap

The Ottawa Senators acquired center Cory Stillman and defenseman Mike Commodore from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Joe Corvo and right wing Patrick Eaves. The Senators clearly got the better end of this transaction...Here is the Senators website on their side of the deal.

Two Habs Arrested

According to the Canadian Press two members of the Montreal Canadians were arrested early this morning in Tampa, FL around 3 a.m. Rookie defenseman Ryan O'Byrne and veteran winger Tom Kostopoulos were taken into custody outside a night club, Whiskey Park, in the Tampa area. Police said that O'Byrne, 23, stole a woman's purse while Kostopoulos resisted an officer. O'Byrne told the police it was his girlfriend's purse while the police said it belonged to another woman.

Kostopoulos, 29, was charged with resisting arrest without violence while O'Byrne was charged with grand theft. Both players were released on bail. The Candiens play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night.

McKeon's Take- They may beat our Bruins on the ice but, at least the B's can stay out of the box off the ice!

Deadline Rumors

The February 26 trading deadline as it does in all sports, brings trade rumors. According to the Boston Herald, there have been rumblings that touted guys like Matt Lashoff, Mark Stuart, and even Phil Kessel could be dealt to land a high-end scoring forward. The Bruins have been rumored all season long to be interested in another solid defenseman as well.

McKeon's Take- There is not much to say about this beside the fact they are what they are, rumors. I know fans want to see a quick fix but, a quick fix may not be the answer. The quick fix is what buried this franchise years ago. You can't get out of a deep hole by simply jumping right out. You have to slowly but surely climb your way back out with smart decisions that will not drop you further into the hole. That's the best analogy I can come up for regarding this but, it makes sense doesn't it? I really do not think it is smart to sell the future for the time being. The Bruins have some promising prospects (both in Boston and in Providence) and if they make a deal without shipping a bunch out for a proven scorer, then sign me up.

A Fernandez Return?

After all that has happened this season it is moderately funny that my first post on "The Spoked B" is about a player on the IR. However, my job is to report the news and this is news today.

According to Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, goaltender Manny Fernandez is making terrific and surprising strides to get back to the ice following the surgery he had just two months ago. Fernandez is rehabilitating his surgically repaired left knee that was plagued with a torn ligament (MCL), not your ideal injury for a butterfly goaltender. Fernandez has been seen "hammering away" lately and their is a small buzz around the locker room pondering the fact that the goalie could possibly make a return before the season is over. Just prior to going under the knife, most ruled out the possibility of Fernandez making a return this season. Will that be the case or can he prove those people wrong?

McKeon's Take- I am on the the fence with this subject. On the positive side, it would be great to have a third goaltender to push the other two the rest of the way. With missing the playoffs a possibility and making it being equal odds, having three goaltenders being pushed to the limit could be a good thing. On the negative, the cap space from Fernandez that the Bruins could potentially use at the trading deadline in a couple weeks could now be put on hold for his return. I really think a return is unlikely but, I am glad he is working extremely hard to get back. If anything, this will be great for next year.

Welcome to The Spoked B!

This is my official welcome to the Spoked B! If there is one thing I have a passion for it is hockey. I love the Boston Bruins and writing so, I am putting the two together. If you want to learn my writing style to get to know me better check out my other site, McKeon & the Mongoose. That is my other website that is mostly about Boston Sports. Unfortunately, Bruins posts don't draw well so, I am going to bring all my Bruins ideas and thoughts here.
